My Love-Hate Relationship with Disney
This has nothing to do with anything other than it popped into my head today.
I hate Disney, or at least the Walt Disney Co. They inch their way into parents' wallets and purses through their children-- it's incideous, made worse by the fact that Disney owns: toys, amusement parks, movies, tv channels, DVDs and probably lots of other stuff I don't know about. Unless you raise your kids in the middle of the bush in Botswana, it's unavoidable that your kids will be hit up by the Walt Disney Co.
Yet... yet...
I don't hate Mickey or Minnie, or any of the other old skool characters. I have a particular fondness for Chip 'n Dale.
Mind you, this is not an obsession. I would never have a jean jacket with Donald Duck on the back. (aside: Why do grown people wear jean jackets with Yosemite Sam and the Tasmanian Devil on them? Why???) But, I find it hard to begrudge those loveable characters.
This thinking does not apply to any of the fairytale characters (Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Mermaid chick, etc). It does apply to the kids from Witch Mountain and Herbie the Love Bug circa 1960s-70s, not the new Love Bug with that crazy actress that shows up drunk everywhere.
Disney Co = evil.
Sexist, fairytale characters = evil.
Modern remakes of old favorites = evil.
Old skool animal characters that talk = awesome.
Fantasia on acid = fucking brilliant.

Wouldn't it be p.c. if Disney-Pixar (are you puking yet?) came up with a story where the male lead character, who I don't know...gets in trouble because he's an adulterer, is bailed out by the heroine. The obvious reply on that one would be, "Oh now they're admitting to being sexist in the past and are now trying to cover their asses."
